What is Stoicism?
Stoicism, a 2000-year-old philosophy founded in Athens in the early 3rd century BC by Zeno of Citium, is a school of thought formed by a continuous chain of teachers and disciples seeking and living, through investigation and practice the answer for the age old question: how to live a good life?
Stoicism, centers around personal virtues and wisdom as the path to true happiness, and teaches us the development of self-control, rationality, and virtue as means to achieve a tranquil and contented life, irrespective of external circumstances.
Stoicism is a tool in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, and wisdom: something one uses to live a great life, rather than some esoteric field of academic inquiry.
Certainly, many of history’s great minds not only understood Stoicism for what it truly is, they sought it out: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Matthew Arnold, Theodore Roosevelt, William Alexander Percy, Ralph Waldo Emerson to name a few.
Stoicism is not a dead academic subject or religious dogma, but a living and evolving discipline, continuously refined and enriched by the everyday experiences, writings and teachings of contemporary Stoics of the time.
Stoicism can be best described as practical wisdom that helps us embrace life’s challenges and teaches us how to differentiate between what we have control over and what we do not, allowing us to focus proactively on the former while learning to accept the latter.
With its very practical approach to life, it is easy to focus on the techniques aimed at promoting personal and professional goals. The teachings of Stoic philosophy are accessible and useful for all, and in all fields of life.
Everyone experiences thoughts, feelings, and impulses that can make living difficult and frustrating.
Stoics attempt to re-frame these experiences through disciplined thinking so that their minds work for them instead of against them. If they can do it, so can you!
Stoics Bookstore is our initiative to introduce the teachings and principles of Stoic philosophy to all seekers of truth, wisdom and those looking for a way to live better, happier and meaningful lives.
